The Cultural Center of Art & Letters – Niki Papatheochari in Glyfada: A New Cultural Chapter
This new cultural space in Glyfada is not simply an exhibition venue presenting a selection of artworks to the public. It is also envisioned as a meeting point and platform for dialogue, primarily around art, but also more broadly, open and inclusive to all. The Cultural Center of Art & Letters has been carefully designed to ensure accessibility and to engage a diverse audience.
What will visitors discover at the Cultural Center of Art & Letters – Niki Papatheochari?
The exhibition features 70 works of petroglyphic painting-sculpture by Niki Papatheochari, created using raw materials gathered from the sea floor. The artist collects these natural fragments and transforms them through her unique process into intricate forms and landscapes. Stone, the primordial material, plays a central role in her work—”the primal element that allowed her to roll forward as a protagonist at the dawn of the world.” Within this ancient body, she believes, lie all the encrypted messages of nature.
Through her works, Papatheochari invites visitors to “listen to the voice of the stone” and to decode the passion and tempestuous personality of the creator herself, as reflected in her art.
Poetry also plays a key role in the visitor’s engagement with the works. The artist’s verses interact with the sculptures, engaging in a dialogue that bridges different art forms, opening up new paths for interpretation and artistic exploration. In this way, the mission of the Niki Papatheochari Center for Art and Discourse becomes ever clearer and more meaningful.
As Papatheochari herself notes,
“The creation of the Center is the result of a long-standing effort to house nomadic stones that my need compelled me to collect. The same need shared by early humans, who painted symbolic figures inside caves to tame Nature.”
To fully convey its messages and become a true cultural beacon of southern Athens, the Center will also host a variety of special activities, including guided tours, educational programs, lectures, and family-friendly events.
The official inauguration of the space will take place on June 17, in the presence of the Minister of Culture, Ms. Olga Kefalogianni. Welcoming speeches will also be delivered by the Mayor of Glyfada, Mr. Giorgos Papanikolaou, and renowned sculptor Kostas Varotsos.
